Stroller Strides®

What should I expect during a Stroller Strides® class?

Stroller Strides® is a total fitness program that moms can do WITH their babies. It includes power walking/jogging (whatever calls to you that day- you can even run) and intervals of strength and body toning exercise using exercise tubing, your stroller, and the environment. Taught by certified fitness instructors with specialty training in the pre and post natal woman, it is a great workout for ANY level of exerciser. All of our instructors abide by the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ recommendations for exercises. Stroller Strides instructors weave songs and activities into the routine designed to engage and entertain baby, while moms are led through a series of exercises specific to her role as Mom.

I just had a baby. When can I start Stroller Strides® classes?

Wait 6-8 weeks before you resume exercise (or until you have a doctor’s clearance).

  • Many internal healing processes are taking place and with increased exertion, a woman returning to too much physical activity too soon may see an increase in lochia which could signal delayed healing due to overexertion.

Resuming exercise (approximately 6-8 weeks postpartum):

  • The intensity of the exercises performed once the woman resumes activity is dependent on her fitness level before and during pregnancy. Taking a month or two (months 3-5 postpartum) to ease back into the intensity of your previous fitness routine is suggested.
  • Relaxin can stay in your body for as little as 5 months post-childbirth and up to twelve months post breastfeeding (which could be a lot longer). Make sure you are avoiding quick direction changes in load bearing exercises on unfamiliar/uneven surfaces during this time. Carpal tunnel syndrome is also a risk when relaxin is present so be careful of wrists and the load they take.

Can I take Stroller Strides® classes while I'm pregnant?

Yes! As long as your doctor clears you for exercise, we welcome you in our classes! All of our teachers are certified Stroller Strides instructors and can provide you with modifications to exercises done in class.

Things to remember about exercise when you're pregnant:

  • Most women can continue to workout during their pregnancy (lifting weights, cardiovascular routines, even some modified HIIT training is okay for well-trained individuals without contraindications).
  • Avoid sports that have a high risk of falling or trauma. Avoid SCUBA diving as decompression sickness in mother and fetus is a risk
  • As the weight of the baby increases and relaxin increases in the body, lifting heavy weights/ stress on the pelvic floor (via Valsalva maneuver) should be limited.
  • Be mindful to keep wrists in neutral to prevent or lessen carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms
  • Abdominal/core strengthening can be completed during pregnancy but lying supine should be avoided after 12-18 weeks.

What should I look for in a jogging stroller?

You can use any sturdy stroller for Stroller Strides classes but if you're looking to buy a brand new stroller, here are some things you might want consider when looking for a jogging stroller:

· Larger, inflatable wheels (this will make the stroller glide easier on several different terrains)

· Adjustable handlebar if you are taller or shorter than average

· Durable/washable fabric

· Good air flow for baby

· Adequate shade cover for baby

· Large stride clearance (this is the distance between the ground and the back axle of the stroller; if you have a large stride, a small clearance may result in hitting this bar when you run).

· Front wheel that can swivel and become fixed

· Caddy/storage areas

· Shock absorbers

· Can accommodate your baby for a large age range (6 weeks- 3+ years)

· When purchasing a double stroller, consider the size of your car and doorways

Stroller Barre®

Is Stroller Barre® included in the cost of a Stroller Strides® membership?

What is Stroller Barre®?

Stroller Barre® is a unique blend of ballet, Pilates, barre, yoga and stroller-based exercises designed to help moms build strength and muscle tone and improve posture. Created by a mom who was formerly a professional ballerina, this class incorporates prenatal and postnatal training and yields amazing results in an exciting, fun format.

What are the benefits of Stroller Barre®

Postpartum women tend to have tight and weak pectoral (chest), abdominal and quadriceps muscles. In addition, the back and hamstrings muscles become stretched and weak. This occurs due to hunched posture from breast or bottle feeding, excessive spinal curves while carrying baby in utero and after birth, and repeatedly picking their new (and rapidly growing) baby up. Stroller Barre® focuses on strengthening and creating an ideal length/tension relationship in all the postural muscles, creating a taller, leaner-looking mommy!

How do Stroller Barre® and Stroller Strides® differ?

In Stroller Barre® classes, moms will complete high repetition, body weight exercises in a limited range of motion. These small pulsing exercises are great for recently postpartum women who may have elevated levels of relaxin in their bodies; relaxin is the hormone responsible for softening ligaments of the pelvic girdle allowing for passage of the baby during delivery (but relaxin acts on other ligaments throughout the body making them loose and susceptible to injury). Barre exercises help new moms improve their posture and strengthen the muscles surrounding joints, leading to a decreased risk of injury.

In Stroller Strides® classes moms will experience full range of motion exercises (think squats, lunges, shoulder press, full sit-ups, etc.) that facilitate an improvement in functional strength. Moms of young children have to complete activities of daily living with a little person in their arms or hanging off their person! Stroller Strides® classes will help moms gain strength for motherhood (and will give mom a great calorie burn at the same time).

When used in conjunction with one another, Stroller Strides® and Stroller Barre® combine to create a stable, healthy and fit mama!
